BioParques works in partnership with representatives of five
Latin American countries in the initiative ParksWatch.
The mission of this program is the protection of biodiversity through
the collection, analysis and dissemination of current information about
the conservation status of tropical protected areas.
To understand the current conservation
status of the parks, a thorough research is undertaken, including:
1. Revision of all relevant bibliography and existing databases.
2. Field evaluations to perform data compilation in situ, to
obtain photographic documentation and to interview area authorities,
visitors, researchers and other actors related to the protected area.
3. Compilation and analysis of a database, to allow the identification
of threats to the protection of biological diversity and of recommended
solutions.
This project started in 1999 and works in parallel in Argentina, Brazil,
Guatemala, México and Peru. In Venezuela, it has been funded
by the Gordon
and Betty Moore Foundation,
the
Foundation for Deep Ecology, the
British Embassy
and the Organization of American States.
Park Profiles
The information generated by this research is disseminated throughout
diverse media and it is summarized in a report called “Park Profile”,
which is made available to the general public. The objective is to contribute
and to support public institutions, non-governmental organizations and
groups from the civil society in their efforts to improve the effectiveness
of protected areas management.
Venezuela has excellent legislation to
safeguard the environment and a group of parks that protects the diversity
of our biological resources and landscapes. If you wish to learn about
the relevance of protected areas and about the threats faced by the
protected areas evaluated by Bioparques, we recommend
you to read the profiles of 21
National Parks and 5 Natural Monuments.
